Sample Size for a Margin of Error in Statistics Confidence intervals are found in the topic of inferential statistics.à The general form of such a confidence interval is an estimate, plus or minus a margin of error.à One example of this is in an opinion poll in which support for an issue is gauged at a certain percent, plus or minus a given percent. Another example is when we state that at a certain level of confidence, the mean is xÃâ /- E, where E is the margin of error. This range of values is due to the nature of the statistical procedures that are done, but the calculation of the margin of error relies upon a fairly simple formula. Although we can calculate the margin of error just by knowing the sample size, population standard deviation and our desired level of confidence, we can flip the question around. What should our sample size be in order to guarantee a specified margin of error? Design of Experiment This sort of basic question falls under the idea of experimental design. For a particular confidence level, we can have a sample size as large or as small as we want. Assuming that our standard deviation remains fixed, the margin of error is directly proportional to our critical value (which relies upon our level of confidence) and inversely proportional to the square root of the sample size. The margin of error formula has numerous implications for how we design our statistical experiment: The smaller the sample size is, the larger the margin of error.To keep the same margin of error at a higher level of confidence, we would need to increase our sample size.Leaving everything else equal, in order to cut the margin of error in half, we would have to quadruple our sample size. Doubling the sample size will only decrease the original margin of error by about 30%. Desired Sample Size To calculate what our sample size needs to be, we can simply start with the formula for margin of error, and solve it for n the sample size. This gives us the formula n (zà ±/2ÃÆ'/E)2. Example The following is an example of how we can use the formula to calculate the desired sample size. The standard deviation for a population of 11th graders for a standardized test is 10 points. How large of a sample of students do we need to ensure at a 95% confidence level that our sample mean is within 1 point of the population mean? The critical value for this level of confidence is zà ±/2 1.64. Multiply this number by the standard deviation 10 to obtain 16.4. Now square this number to result in a sample size of 269. Other Considerations There are some practical matters to consider. Lowering the level of confidence will give us a smaller margin of error. However, doing this will mean that our results are less certain. Increasing the sample size will always decrease the margin of error. There may be other constraints, such as costs or feasibility, that do not allow us to increase the sample size.

Overview of OLED Technology OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode and its cutting edge technology results from many innovations in display monitors, lighting, and more. As the name suggests, OLED technology is the next-generation advance of regular LEDs and LCDs, or liquid crystal displays. LED Displays Closely related LED displays were first introduced to consumers in 2009. LED television sets were much thinner and brighter than their predecessors: plasmas, LCD HDTVs, and, of course, the humongous and outdated CRTs, or cathode-ray tube displays. OLED displays were introduced commercially a year later, and allow for even thinner, brighter, and crisper displays than LED. With OLED technology, completely flexible screens that can fold or roll up are possible. Lighting OLED technology is exciting because it is a viable and functional innovation in lighting. A lot of OLED products are light panels whose large areas diffuse lighting, but the technology lends itself well to different applications like the ability to change shape, colors, and transparency. Other benefits of OLED lighting compared to traditional alternatives includes energy efficiency, and the lack of poisonous mercury. In 2009, Philips became the first company to manufacture an OLED lighting panel called Lumiblade. Philips described the potential of their Lumiblade as thin (less than 2 mm thick) and flat, and with little heat dissipation, Lumiblade can be embedded into most materials with ease. It gives designers almost limitless scope to mold and meld Lumiblade into everyday objects, scenes and surfaces, from chairs and clothing to walls, windows and tabletops. In 2013, Philips and BASF combined efforts to invent a lighted transparent car roof. It will be solar powered, and will turn transparent when switched off. Thats just one of many revolutionary developments possible with such state-of-the-art-tech. Mechanical Functions and Processes In the simplest of terms, OLEDs are made from organic semiconductor materials that emit light when an electrical current is applied. OLEDs works by passing electricity through one or more incredibly thin layers of organic semiconductors. These layers are sandwiched between two charged electrodesââ¬âone positive and one negative. The ââ¬Å"sandwichâ⬠is placed on a sheet of glass or other transparent material which, in technical terms, is called a ââ¬Å"substrateâ⬠. When current is applied to the electrodes, they emit positively and negatively charged holes and electrons. These combine in the middle layer of the sandwich to create a brief, high-energy state called ââ¬Å"excitationâ⬠. As this layer returns to its original, stable, ââ¬Å"non-excitedâ⬠state, the energy flows evenly through the organic film, causing it to emit light. History OLED diode technology was invented by researchers at the Eastman Kodak company in 1987. Chemists Ching W. Tang and Steven Van Slyke were the principal inventors. In June 2001, Van Slyke and Tang received an Industrial Innovation Award from the American Chemical Society for their work with organic light-emitting diodes. Kodak released several of the earliest OLED-equipped products, including the first digital camera with a 2.2-inch OLED display with 512 by 218 pixels, the EasyShare LS633, in 2003. Kodak has since licensed its OLED technology to many companies, and they are still researching OLED light technology, display technology, and other projects. In the early 2000s, researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Department of Energy invented two technologies necessary to make flexible OLEDs. On the other hand, in a syn thetic judgment, the predicate implies a point not already contained in the concept, and, therefore, it expresses new knowledge.... The judgments regarding nonexistence nullify both the subject and the predicate; therefore, this does not give rise to a contradiction. Based on these arguments, Kant refuted the notion of a necessary being. In addition, he contends that if existence is considered as a fundamental component of the definition of something, then affirming that it exists constitutes as tautology. Therefore, while making the analytic judgment that existence is a characteristic of God, we are reiterating that God exists. Thus, no synthetic judgment is made to annex novel information with regard to existence to the theoretical definition of God. Moving on, he criticizes the concept of being by pointing out that it is not a real predicate; thereby, it cannot be used to define a concept related to something. In plain terms, saying that something exists does not indicate anything in relation to the concept; instead, it denotes the existence of an object that matches with the concept. To say that objects of se nse exist does not imply an extra property related to the concept; instead, it is to be discovered outside the thought and we have an experiential awareness of it in space and time (Kant 89). In the beginning of the film Jean Kilbourne states that, ââ¬Å"the average American is exposed to over 3,000 ads every single dayâ⬠. Thus, the advertising industry has the power to impact our outlook on many things in society including women. The issue is that advertisers are not looking out for our best interest; their main goal is to increase profit. As a result, individuals are physically, mentally, and emotionally affected by our cultureââ¬â¢s unrealistic ideal image of beauty. I believe that we are constantly presented with this falsehood in the media about loving our bodies; only if our bodies are conveniently situated in what society finds attractive. For example, back in 2010, Victoriaââ¬â¢s Secret launched the ââ¬Å"Love Your Bodyâ⬠campaign. While it is very important to encourage everyone to love their body, the women depicted in the campaign all have the same body type. There is nothing wrong with their body type which is considered very slender, tall, long legs, and toned. The issue is that this is the only body presented in the campaign which makes women with other body types feel inferior and not of value. To this day, Victoriaââ¬â¢s Secret still chooses to use this particularly slender body type to advertise their lingerie and such. Contrary to Victoriaââ¬â¢s Secret, Dove started ââ¬Å"The Dove Campaign for Real Beautyâ⬠in 2004. The campaign was started due to the fact that it was necessary to broaden the idea of beauty because it had become limiting and unattainable. The starting fares are 35 baht or $1. 17 US dollars for the first three kilometers and 5 baht or $0. 16 US dollars for every additional kilometer. This is considered to be a great value and is great for not only Bangkok locals, but even for foreigners. Motorcycle taxis are also very common in Bangkok particularly because of common traffic jams. Because of their small size they are the fastest way to navigate through traffic jams. The drivers of the motorcycle taxis can be easily spotted by their bright-colored vests and helmets that are worn by both, the driver and the passenger. Because motorcycle taxis do not have meters, fares are agreed on before take-off. The metro is another mode of transportation that is commonly used in Bangkok, but is more commonly used to travel around the whole country. It is almost like an underground, tunnel enclosed railroad on which trains are able to travel through. The metro is most commonly used by those who have to travel long distances from one Thailand city to another. Fares are based upon distance traveled. Real Estate Foreign Investment Thailandââ¬â¢s government maintains an open, market-oriented economy and encourages foreign direct investment as a means of promoting economic development, employment and technology transfer. International Trade Statistics Thailand's exports were $174. 8 billion (2008 est. ), up from $150 billion (2007 est. ). Their highest-valued imported products were capital goods, intermediate goods and raw materials, consumer goods, and fuels. Trade Regulations Import duties are generally levied on any imported goods before releasing them from the custody of Customs; except for goods receiving specific privilege that qualifies according to the law. Agriculture has been the major source of human survival and component of economic development worldwide. Its productivity increases efficiently due to factors including fertilizers utilization, hybrid strains development, and advance farm management practices (Trautmann, Porter, & Wagenet).The most often studied contamination source in agriculture is usually related to organic matters such as animal manure, bedding, feed left-over, and animalsââ¬â¢ corpses.As a matter of fact, in United States, a study estimated that agriculture generates around 112 million of dry manure per year that results to the most abundant waste product of the industry, which is about 80, 000 lbs/year of swine-related manure per 1000 animal mass (Gaechter).In these modern days, the water is a great factor in agriculture, animal farming, and irrigation. A study made by USDA and estimated on Agricultural Census that around 11 million of irrigated acres in 1997 were used to raise crops that were used for anima l feed production.Because of this, a large amount of water is lost in relation to irrigation and evaporation due to exposure to atmosphere; and only a fraction is used for purely vegetation production (Gaechter).Some modern practices cause damage to soil and water resources, in environment as a whole. But, the main factors are proven in three of the many themes. The struggle for power between Ralph and Jack led to destruction of the island because power can be either used or abused. The dark side of human nature can also contribute because it is the evil in people that brings out the worst in them. Finally the fear of the unknown also led to destruction because what people fear can cause them to do things that can cause harm or hurt to others or themselves. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding the struggle for power, the dark side of human nature, and the fear of the unknown all contribute to the destruction of the boyââ¬â¢s makeshift society on the island. To begin with, the constant battle for power ultimately leads to the breakdown of society on the island. The first instance of the struggle for power is between Ralph and Jack. This is shown clearly when Jack says ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s not a hunter. Heââ¬â¢d never got us meat. He isnââ¬â¢t perfect and we donââ¬â¢t know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey him for nothing. All this talk- ââ¬Å"(Golding,140). This quote illustrates the back and forth battle between Ralph and Jack. They both share common differences which contradict each other. One might want one thing while the other would want another, this would make it difficult on the group as they would have to choose which person to follow. Secondly, Jacks craving for power also leads to the breakdown of society when Jack states ââ¬Å"Who thinks Ralph oughtnââ¬â¢t to be chief, hands up, whoever wants Ralph not to be chief?â⬠(140). This quote shows how Jack is in constant need of pow er and how is always attempting to take power from the chief, Ralph. He believes that the strongest should rule with brute force and therefore he should be chief. Also, by taking the power from Ralph he believes that there will be no more interference as Ralph could be the only one to oppose him. Jack tries to use authoritian power to try and gain control. Lastly, Jacks persistent battle with Ralph to gain control and be chief and lead the tribe is demonstrated when Jack says ââ¬Å"Listen all of you. Me and my hunters are living along the beach at the flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun. If you want to join come and see us. Perhaps weââ¬â¢ll let you join. Perhaps notâ⬠(155). In this instance, after jack is turned down for leader in the original tribe leaves to create his own tribe thus leaving the group demolished. He believes that the tribe Ralph is leading is not proper and he is the only chief on the island. To end off with, the craving and struggle for power ultim ately lead to the destruction of society the boys created on the island. To start off with, the darkness of the human heart can also be blamed for destruction of society on the island. Firstly, the boys start off as innocent boys looking for rescue but later turn dark as proven in the quote ââ¬Å"The afternoon wore on, hazy and dreadful with damp heat; The sow staggered her way ahead of them, bleeding and mad, the hunters followed wedded to her in lust. Excited by the long chase and the dropped blood.â⬠. This quote shows the boys dark thirst for blood. Later in the novel the boys completely dismiss their old values by constantly killing. Even the courageous leader Ralph has his hand at killing. All this killing shows how the darkness of humans can be shown. Also, the boys show darkness again in the killing of Simon ââ¬Å"At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock and leaped on the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws.â⬠(168). The darkest act of the boys is the kil ling of Simon because all the boys can be blamed for his death not just a few. This diminishes all that is good and proper on the island. Simon is sacrificed to stop darkness just as Jesus was. Finally, the boys darkness is proven again in the killing of the wise Piggy shown in this quote ââ¬Å"Piggys arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pigs after its been killed. Then the sea breathed again, in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pink over the rock and when it went back again, sucking in, the body of piggy was gone.â⬠(200) To Justify, the selfishness that comes along with the darkness lead to the death of the rational thinking on the island. The darkness that was shown in piggys killing is at the point of the novel where all the boys except Ralph are savages. The savagery of the boys shows how dark the human soul can become. The evil that comes along with the darkness of human nature and the deaths of simon and piggy help lead to destruction of society. Why the Sun Looks Yellow When Its Really Not If you ask a random person to tell you what color the sun is, chances are he will look at you like youre an idiot and tell you the sun is yellow. Would you be surprised to learn the sun is not yellow? Its actually white. If you were to view the sun from the International Space Station or the moon, youd see its true color. Check space photos online. See the true color of the sun? The reason the sun appears yellow during the day from Earth, or orange to red at sunrise and sunset, is because we view our favorite star through the filter of the atmosphere. This is one of the tricky ways in which light and our eyes change the way we perceive colors, as is the case with the so-called impossible colors. The True Color of the Sun If you view sunlight through a prism, you can see the entire range of wavelengths of light. Another example of the visible portion of the solar spectrum is seen in the rainbow. Sunlight isnt a single color of light, but a combination of the emission spectra of all the elements in the star. All of the wavelengths combine to form white light, which is the net color of the sun. The sun emits different amounts of various wavelengths. If you measure them, the peak output in the visible range is actually in the green portion of the spectrum (not yellow). However, visible light isnt the only radiation emitted by the sun. Theres alsoà blackbody radiation.à The average of the solar spectrum is a color, which indicates the temperature of the sun and other stars. Our sun averages about 5,800 Kelvin, which appears nearly white. Out of the brightest stars in the sky, Rigel appears blue and has a temperature exceeding 100,000K, while Betelguese has a cooler temperature of 35,00K and appears red. How the Atmosphere Affects Solar Color The atmosphere changes the apparent color of the sun by scattering light. The effect is called Rayleigh scattering. As violet and blue light gets scattered away, the average visible wavelength or color of the sun shifts toward red, but the light isnt entirely lost. The scattering of short wavelengths of light by molecules in the atmosphere is what gives the sky its blue color. When viewed through the thicker layer of atmosphere at sunrise and sunset, the sun appears more orange or red. When viewed through the thinnest layer of air at midday, the sun appears closest to its true color, yet still has a yellow tint. Smoke and smog also scatter light and can make the sun appear more orange or red (less blue).à The same effect also makes the moon appear more orange or red when it is close to the horizon, but more yellow or white when it is high in the sky. Why Pictures of the Sun Look Yellow If you view a NASA photo of the sun, or a photo taken from any telescope, youre usually viewing a false color image. Often, the color that is chosen for the image is yellow because its familiar. Sometimes photos taken through green filters are left as-is because the human eye is most sensitive to green light and can readily distinguish detail. If you use a neutral density filter to observe the sun from Earth, either as a protective filter for a telescope or so you can observe a total solar eclipse, the sun will appear yellow because youre reducing the amount of light that reaches your eyes, but not changing the wavelength. Yet, if you used that same filter in space and didnt correct the image to make it prettier, youd see a white sun.
